How Do MiSight Contact Lenses Work?

MiSight Myopia Contact Lenses with ActivControl Technology

In clinical trials, MiSight® 1-Day Contact lenses slowed the progression of myopia in children by 59% on average and 41% of eyes had no progression. On average, age-appropriate children between the ages of 8-15 wearing MiSight® 1 day progressed less than -1.00D over 6-years. In addition, MiSight 1-Day lenses showed a 52% reduction in eye lengthening.

In addition, MiSight® contact lenses showed no-rebound effect upon discontinuation, when children were transitioned into regular contact lenses.

In order to achieve these results, children were asked to wear the contact lenses for at least 10 hours a day for at least 6-days a week. The ideal age to start wearing MiSight 1-Day Contact Lenses is between 8-12 years of age.

MiSight® contact lenses is also one of the most studied contact lenses and is in its 7th year and remains the only contact lens to be FDA-approved to slow the progression of myopia in children.

Why Does Slowing the Rate of Myopia (Nearsightedness) Matter?

Slowing the rate of myopia progression in children is vital for several reasons. First, myopia is a vision condition in which distant objects appear blurry, making it difficult for children to see things like whiteboards or signs in the classroom. This can lead to difficulties in learning and can negatively impact academic performance.

In addition, myopia can increase the risk of other eye conditions later in life, such as glaucoma, cataracts, and retinal detachment. Slowing down myopia progression during childhood can help reduce the risk of these potentially serious eye conditions in adulthood.

Even mild myopia, as low as -1.00 D, can significantly increase the risk of glaucoma, myopic maculopathy, retinal detachment, and cataracts in your child's lifetime by 2-3 times. Higher levels of myopia over -6.00 D have even more significant risks. The risk of retinal detachments increases by 44 times, cataracts by 6 times, glaucoma by 3 times, and myopic maculopathy by a staggering 127 times (that is not a typo).

In addition to the increased risk of serious eye conditions, high myopia may limit their candidacy for refractive eye surgery, such as LASIK, PRK, or SMILE. Therefore, managing and controlling your child's myopia is essential to minimize their risk of future vision problems and other eye health issues.

Overall, slowing the rate of myopia in children is essential to promoting good eye health and ensuring optimal vision for a lifetime.

Do MiSight Contact Lenses Stop Myopia or Nearsightedness?

It's important to note that while MiSight glasses can effectively slow down myopia progression, they do not cure the condition or improve existing nearsightedness. They are primarily designed to be used by children (ages 6-18) who are at risk of developing myopia or whose myopia is progressing rapidly.

As with any treatment, some people may not respond favourably and may continue to experience rapid myopia progression. As such, routine eye exams with one of our optometrists are required every 3-6 months to monitor for changes to ensure we see the desired results.

In some cases, we may elect to combine MiSight Contact Lenses with other myopic treatments to offer increased or more continuous treatment. Some children may benefit from using MiSight Contact Lenses in conjunction with low-dose atropine eye drops or MiyoSmart myopia-control eyeglasses.

Combining other treatments with MiSight Contact Lenses allows our optometrists to create a customized treatment plan tailored to each child's unique needs.

What Are The Risks of Using MiSight Contact Lenses?

A neon sign that reads Contact Lenses

As with any medical device or treatment, there are risks associated with using MiSight Contact Lenses.

Incorrect handling or inadequate hygiene practices may lead to various complications. These risks include eye infections, corneal ulcers, dry eyes, irritation, and allergic reactions. Wearing contact lenses for extended periods or sleeping with them can increase the risk of these complications. Additionally, wearing contact lenses in environments with airborne particles, such as during certain work activities or water-related activities, may lead to contamination and potential eye damage.

To mitigate these risks, it is crucial to follow proper hygiene practices, including regular cleaning and disinfection, adhering to recommended wearing schedules, and seeing one of our eye doctors if you have any problems or concerns.

Overall, the risks associated with MiSight contact lenses are the same as those associated with wearing any contact lens and can be mitigated with proper care and handling.
