ESSILOR | Stellest® Myopia Treatment Eyeglasses
Does your child's eyeglass prescription keep getting stronger and stronger each year? Are you seeking a safe and effective treatment option to help control or slow your child's myopia or nearsighted progression? Look no further than Essilor Stellest® lenses. Designed specifically for children aged 6-16 experiencing increasing levels of myopia or nearsightedness, Essilor Stellest® lenses are clinically proven to be a convenient and effective solution.
myopia = nearsightedness
A randomized clinical trial found that Stellest® lenses can reduce the rate of myopia progression by up to 67% on average and axial elongation of the eye by 60%. This is achieved through the lenses' unique H.A.L.T. (Highly Aspherical Lenslet Target Technology) design, which provides a comprehensive approach to managing myopia progression.
With Stellest® lenses, parents can feel confident in providing their children with a proven and safe treatment option for their myopia.
How Do Stellest® Myopia Treatment Eyeglasses Work?
Essilor Stellest® eyeglasses are a type of eyewear designed to slow down the progression of myopia (nearsightedness) in children. These lenses use a unique technology called H.A.L.T which uses 1021 aspherical lenslets that cover 40% of the lens surface in 11 concentric rings, while the central 9mm of the lens remains clear and distortion-free.
The reading spheres in the peripheral honeycomb treatment zone causes peripheral light to focus in front of the retina rather than behind it, as in traditional eyeglasses lenses. This creates an intentional blur in the child's peripheral vision, stimulating the eye to grow and adapt more naturally and reducing the rate of myopia progression.
The lenses must be perfectly centered on the child’s pupil, so both pupil distance and segment height measurements are required, like any other lens. In addition, the frame needs to fit correctly and not slip down the nose.

Why Does Slowing the Rate of Myopia (Nearsightedness) Matter?
Slowing the rate of myopia in children is vital for several reasons. First, myopia is a vision condition in which distant objects appear blurry, making it difficult for children to see things like whiteboards or signs in the classroom. This can lead to difficulties in learning and can negatively impact academic performance.
Myopia Increases the Risk Of Developing Future Eye Conditions Like:
Glaucoma
Cataracts
Retinal Detachments
Myopic Maculopathy
Even mild myopia, as low as -1.00 D, can significantly increase the risk of glaucoma, myopic maculopathy, retinal detachment, and cataracts in your child's lifetime by 2-3 times. Higher levels of myopia over -6.00 D have even more significant risks. The risk of retinal detachments increases by 44 times, cataracts by 6 times, glaucoma by 3 times, and myopic maculopathy by a staggering 127 times (that is not a typo).
In addition to the increased risk of serious eye conditions, high myopia may limit their candidacy for refractive eye surgery, such as LASIK, PRK, or SMILE. Therefore, managing and controlling your child's myopia is essential to minimize their risk of future vision problems and other eye health issues.
Overall, slowing the rate of myopia in children is essential to promoting good eye health and ensuring optimal vision for a lifetime.

Do Essilor Stellest® Lenses Stop The Progression of Myopia or Nearsightedness?
It's important to note that while Stellest® lenses can effectively slow down myopia progression, they do not cure the condition or improve existing nearsightedness. They are primarily designed to be used by children (ages 6-16) who are at risk of developing myopia or whose myopia is progressing rapidly. The clinical trials enrolled children ages 8-13.
As with any treatment, some people may not respond favourably and may continue to experience rapid myopia progression. As such, routine eye exams with one of our optometrists are recommended every 6 months to monitor for changes to ensure we see the desired results.
In some cases, we may elect to combine Stellest® lenses with other myopic treatments to offer increased or more continuous treatment. Some children may benefit from using Stellest® lenses in conjunction with atropine eye drops or MiSight myopia-control contact lenses.
Combining other treatments with Stellest® lenses allows our optometrists to create a customized treatment plan tailored to each child's unique needs.
What Are The Risks of Using Stellest® Lenses
As with any medical device or treatment, there are risks associated with using Stellest® eyeglasses lenses.
Some children may experience side effects from the lenses, such as blurred vision or headaches. However, these side effects are typically temporary and will subside as the eyes adjust to the lenses. In some cases, we may need to adjust the frame position to ensure they are looking through the centre of the lens and not through the honeycomb peripheral defocus portion.
Older teens may also complain about peripheral blur with night driving or with sports and may need to switch to an alternative myopia treatment. We generally don’t recommend that teenagers drive with Stellest® lenses for this year.
The other primary risk is that they don't produce the desired treatment outcome, and your child's myopia continues progressing.
Overall, the risks associated with Stellest® eyeglasses lenses are relatively minor and can be managed through careful use and regular communication with an eye doctor.
